I am a self taught artist working from my home based studio in Ballingarry. Co. Tipperary. I have been painting for a number of years but only took it up seriously 5 years ago. My preferred medium is oils and my main body of work is landscapes. My work is primarily concerned with the study of light, and its relationship to landscape and seascape.
I tend to explore the natural beauty of our country and locality. I am inspired by the way it invokes different moods, and memories. Rather than predetermining the composition, I like to work intuitively, for example, allowing interesting moments from one of my many walks in the countryside to inform my painting. My landscapes are often described as evocative and captivating. They boldly depart from the cardinal rules of Fore, Middle and Background, and instead use the background to a much greater effect by creating immensely striking and dramatic skies. My use of a fluidity and interplay of light create the illusion of distance and depth which combines with the use of earthy tones in the foreground. This sense of vast space created from the colours, light and illusion achieves a serenity and tranquillity that beguiles and allures the viewer.
I also run weekly oil/acrylic classes in the South Tipp Arts Centre, Clonmel and locally in Ballingarry.
