Irish artist Ber Earley, Kerry

Based in Co Kerry, I am inspired by ordinary everyday scenes, aspects of life and objects around me. This part of Ireland is not lacking in inspiration! Life can be frenetic and there is a lot we can take for granted. My aim is to share with the viewer a space to pause and feel the magic and wonder of the simple and seemingly mundane that surrounds us.

My art practice stems from early years and has continued throughout my adult life despite pursuing a scientific career. In recent years, the benefit of early retirement has afforded me the opportunity to concentrate on my first love.

Working from my home based studio, my paintings begin life as observations and my associated emotions towards subject matter. I like to explore a variety of subjects from landscapes to still life to peopled scenes. My creative process involves making a number of sketches in order to create a composition that feels right to me. If possible, I will also take photos as reference. Working mainly in oils or sometimes watercolour, the subject matter takes on its own life. Following in this journey, I endeavour to arrive at a final piece that captures my emotional response. My paintings are generally figurative although I am recently drawn toward impressionism. I like to use rich, saturated colours. I love the feeling of generously applying oil paint to the canvas with the brush, or knife thus achieving more luminous, textured work.

Largely self taught, my work continues to progress and evolve as I grow and challenge myself as an artist.
