Donna is a First Class Honours graduate of Fine Art (DIT), she studied a Masters in Sculpture at NCAD and received a recommendation from the Director of IMMA at her graduate show in 2015. Having spent six years organising extreme International running events, breaking from the traditional Gallery setting, she used the award ceremonies to showcase Sculpture in the form of prizes for the Champions and unique hand painted medals for each participant.
With concepts rooted in duality and continuity, Drawing has been consistent throughout the years, inspiration stretches 'as far as the East is to the West’. From the starry heavens of the Southern Cross to the lonesome shores of the thundering Atlantic.
Since travel restrictions began, she's re-exploring sketch books from time spent in Australia, images from en plein air drawings, quickly capturing a scene, are reimagined into paintings. 'If the human heart can experience such a mixture of euphoria and agony' she writes, 'then a color palette must attempt to do the same'.
Donna's hectic and anxious style achieves an overall zen at times, as if the introspective sitting and searching for a line ultimately awarded her a stillness of mind. There is a sculptural element to the works, ambling somewhere between two and three and sometimes the fifth dimensions.
Recent work devotes itself to the manifestation of an archetype, the ideal Man, overturning the traditional view of the classical Muse in Art. She places him in ethereal settings, with broad horizons and unfathomable depths. The viewer is invited to share in a vision open to interpretation.
Currently, Donna is working on Commission. Thanks for visiting New Irish Art!
