Born Dublin, Clontarf – a while back. After living in the Isle of Man for 14 years, Lorraine returned to settle in Carlow, the land of her ancestors, where she paints and teaches from her home studio. In 2013, she received a bursary from Artlinks to guide her practice. In 2014, she was invited to exhibit a themed solo show by Carlow Arts Festival which was a great success and the beginning of a busy career. She has since had work selected by the OPW and commissioned by the Semi state body Teagasc and has recently had her work recognised by, and invited to become a member of The Design and Crafts Council of Ireland who were impressed by her new Genuine Gold Leaf work. These Gold Leaf pieces are based on the old negative film roll and she uses this idea to strip back unnecessary elements to showcase iconic landmarks and buildings. She may be the only artist to use the gold leaf in this way. In other work, she paints with oils, worked in buttery layers or glazing, and often using methods to create under-painted textural effects. Her work continually evolves combining contemporary art guided by traditional approaches. She is influenced by the impressionists like Monet and Vincent Van Gogh and Turner's mastery of illustration and atmosphere and takes inspiration from her natural surroundings finding it in form, colour, reflections, light, shadow and daily interactions.
