Irish artist Mairead Holohan, Carlow

I live in rural Carlow at the foot of the Blackstairs mountains. I am a graduate of NCAD and WIT. I worked with horses for years and have an in depth knowledge of the horse. I work with community groups to enable myself to paint what I like.

I like to work from life whenever possible in a manner called Alla Prima, which is done on one sitting and not reworked, where a sense of immediacy is hoped for. In my work I aim to catch a moment in time and an impression with as little detail as possible. When working on animals I work from photographs, I like to retain a sense of realism and light and aim for balance and an interesting composition.

The work is mainly figurative and still life. I do portraits of people and animals.
