Irish artist Michael Lee, Dublin

Michael Lee is a self-taught artist and photographer. He retired from RTE in 2018, where he was senior news cameraman. He worked on major documentaries and major news events during his career. Michael has always enjoyed art and loved to sketch and draw from an early age. However, the demands of work and family life made painting a lovely, but unlikely event during his working years. On retirement, Mike had an idea that he would like to paint at some point, but when the covid pandemic hit in march 2020, it propelled this idea into reality. After trying various mediums and styles, he opted for acrylic paint and canvas board at this point. Heavy use of impasto and palette knife is his signature style. He also works in mixed media and is beginning to experiment with watercolour.

Michael won the dlr Lexicon Paint a Postcard competition in 2021 and his painting of Dun Laoghaire and the Lexicon Library was published as a postcard which is available free from the Lexicon Library in Dun Laoghaire. The original painting was subsequently purchased by the library for its permanant collection.

Mike lives in Glenageary, Co Dublin.
