Irish artist Rory Thompson, Waterford

It began in 1998 illustrating for a local magazine, 'The Tramore Strand' creating cartoons and comic strips and since then I have illustrated various book covers and currently work as the cartoonist for the popular Irish satirical website, 'Waterford Whispers News'.

Over the past few years I've worked internationally on feature films, shorts, TV, theatre and live events as a concept artist, sets/props fabricator, a production designer and as a scenic painter.

The preferred mediums are watercolours, gouache and acrylic paints and I usually paint on paper, wood or canvas. Painting sets, murals and large opera and theatre backdrops has enabled me to work on a variety of scales and with different mediums.

My paintings usually fall into the landscape or figurative categories and the emphasis is primarily on light and texture. Currently I am working on Illustrations for a children's storybook and developing a short animated film as part of an MA in media practices.
